About the media

Iron removal media "Birm" is designed to remove excess iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide (bad rotten egg smell) from the water. It is a factory-made media that is coated by naturally extracted manganese dioxide.

Operating principle

Through a natural chemical reaction, the filter media helps to filter out elements from the water that exceed the hygiene standards, making the water clean and fit for consumption! The media acts as a catalyst between oxygen and soluble iron compounds. By oxidising iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide (hydrogen sulphide), the filter medium enhances the oxidation of Fe++ (iron present in water) to Fe+++. This produces iron hydroxide, which becomes a sediment and this type of iron can be easily filtered out of the water. Once the substances listed above have become sediment, they are then 'trapped' in the iron removal media and no longer pass through to the water supply of the house. When the filter media becomes clogged, all the accumulated substances are removed to the sewer during the water filter regeneration process.

Use

It is important that the inlet pressure is not low (at least 2 bar is recommended) so that the Birm filler is properly "backwashed". If the pressure is too low, the filter media may not drain well and will not remove all the "trapped" substances from the water. As a result the intended amount of water, wont be filtered. It is also important to note that Birm iron removal aggregate is lighter than "Pyrolox” anti-iron and anti-manganese media. This is why the ratio between the amount of media and the water filter column into which the filter media is poured is crucial, as the Birm filter aggregate needs to have room to expand in the column during the regeneration process. Otherwise, the media in the column may rise too high and clog the filter. The correct ratio of the amount of media to the filter column will ensure a reliable and long service life.

Advantages and disadvantages

The biggest advantage of this media is its weight. Birm is a lightweight water filters media, which means that the filters with this media uses less water during the regeneration process. This may be relevant for those who have biological treatment plants, as it saves water waste compared to other iron removal medias. This is because it is easier to "backwash" the lighter iron removal media so that it returns to its original state when it has not accumulated excess material from the incoming water yet. Lighter media also means easier maintenance of the filter in the event of a failure. However, despite these advantages, there are and disadvantages. For example, Birm iron removal media operates in a narrower pH range compared to other iron removal medias. Therefore, at lower pH levels, the choice should be Pyrolox filter media. This is less common, but it is possible that the range of Birm media is insufficient for proper water filtration, so for low pH levels we recommend choosing "Pyrolox" media.
